Carmen Nava was the first street vendor in Chicago to finally get a license in 2019 to sell tamales after a yearslong battle between the city and the Street Vendor Association of Chicago. Today Nava and her husband are two of the owners of a commercial kitchen that a group of vendors had been renting since 2017 with hopes of getting their businesses legalized, as required by the city. They want to rent it to other vendors across the city at affordable prices to ensure that more of their fellow vendors can get legalized and avoid problems with the police.
